Handwriting Recognition on WindowsXP Tablet PC

by Patrick Haluptzok, Handwriting Recognition Group
Microsoft Corporation

This tutorial covers how to write a handwriting recognizer for the WindowsXP TabletPC 2005 edition. TabletPC hardware supports users writing digital ink on their screen with a special pen. Handwriting recognizers are used by the system and applications to convert digital ink into text. WindowsXP TabletPC edition comes with a Text Input Utility that can be used as a keyboard replacement. It allows users to write ink and convert the ink into text for entry into an application. Researchers and 3rd party ISVs can write handwriting recognizers and install them on the TabletPC. The TabletPC platform provides a business opportunity for recognition companies and makes a great platform for handwriting recognition researchers to demonstrate their work.

An overview of the handwriting recognition functionality exposed to applications is presented along with a detailed description of the functions and data structures required by a handwriting recognizer installed on TabletPC. The tutorial also covers the steps necessary to leverage the Tablet SDK in order to develop complete inking applications that use handwriting recognition. Microsoft is shipping an updated version of the Windows XP TabletPC edition in the fall of 2004 and this tutorial will cover all the latest changes. Attendees should leave this tutorial with a good understanding of the recognition functionality provided to applications in the Windows TabletPC edition, and how to write and install a handwriting recognizer in the TabletPC.
